A short description of Nursing

BScN (in collaboration with Confederation College), BScN (3-year compressed), BScN (for Registered Nurses), Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program, Master of Public Health

During your course of study in Lakehead’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, you will learn to apply a broad range of concepts from the sciences and liberal arts when caring for clients of all age groups. Maximizing health using communication and interpersonal skills, and health promotion and health protection strategies, you will become a member of a health care team designed to meet the needs of society in the future.

Lakehead’s Nursing students experience the ‘cutting edge’ of new knowledge as our faculty and staff incorporate examples of their research into the classroom. Some examples of current research include: the aging process, women’s health, AIDS, Aboriginal health, oncology, cardiac disease, and much more.

As a unique part of the program, successful students in Year 4 can arrange clinical experiences throughout the world. In the past, students have chosen to travel to such places as Thailand, Bermuda, England, Finland and Africa as an enhancement to their university experience.

A compressed three-year program is available for students who meet university entrance requirements and have a minimum overall final high school average of 80%. Students will enroll in courses in the spring/summer between Years 1 and 2 and between Years 2 and 3.

Lakehead's nursing students also benefit from having a brand new hospital, located across the street from campus, coupled with state-of-the-art technology. The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, technology and professional nursing staff, expose our students to the most dynamic procedures and modern equipment that the health profession has to offer.

"Fourth year has proven to be by far the most exciting. With the freedom to select my own learning opportunity, I was able to explore an area that is not commonly characteristic of nursing. I had a placement at the Ottawa-Carleton Prison Health Care Services. This experience was unique in that it provided for an unconventional learning opportunity, in a setting reserved for some of Canada's most hardened criminals. By breaking away from the traditional setting I was able to grasp a much greater understanding of the broad scope of nursing available to new grads."
