Why do you enjoy working for Lakehead University?
I enjoy working for Lakehead University for a number of reasons, but number one reason on my list is the people. Working for a smaller University gives you the chance to really get to know your co-workers and they become close friends so quickly. As you can all tell from the Recruitment team photos, we all genuinely enjoying being together and is one of the reason my workday is so enjoyable. When you come for a visit to either campus you will see just what I mean!
What is your favourite place on campus?
The “Learning Commons” on the new Orillia campus is by far my favourite part to be when I’m on campus. This student centred space fosters a feeling of community and encourages students from all the different disciplines to work together. Considering I’m such a team orientated person, a space that encourages interaction between members of the Lakehead University Orillia community (students, staff and professors alike) is where you will find me when I have a spare moment.
What attracted you to Orillia?
Growing up in the small town of Lowville, Ontario, the love of the outdoors has always been a big part of my life and is why Orillia is such a great fit. The friendly, small town feel of Orillia combined with the wealth outdoor recreational activities available in and around the city fits my lifestyle well. Going “Green” and commuting to and from work on my Specialized Enduro Mountain Bike, is another perk of living in the city of Orillia.
What is there to see and do in Orillia?
When I’m “Off the clock” my favourite thing to do is jump on my bike, go for a ride and finish it off with a dip in Lake Couchiching or Lake Simcoe. The city of Orillia’s location also makes camping, canoeing, hiking, fishing, swimming and mountain biking all accessible if you want to get out of the city.
Some of the local events that I enjoy attending are the Mariposa Folk Festival, the Orillia Fall Fail, the Sunday Band Concerts and the local Farmers Market. Because I’m infatuated with History, I also enjoy visiting the Steven Leacock Museum from time to time.
