Athletics
Athletics
is an integral part of the University lifestyle that is vital to the
educational development of each and every student. A focussed athletics program
creates a University environment that fosters friendship, goodwill and overall
fitness. Athletics enhances Lakehead’s image by adding diversity and richness
to University life.
Lakehead University’s dynamic and varied Athletics
Department recognizes the necessity for comprehensive campus recreation
programs and works hard to make students’ time at our University as enjoyable
as possible. Lakehead
University offers a
variety of varsity and club level sports listed below. Be sure to check our
extensive selection of intramurals offered through Campus Recreation.
Also, you

Academics and the Athlete
Our
department recognizes the challenge faced by student athletes in balancing
success both in athletics, and in the classroom. We have implemented the
following programs to assist in their success:
Academic
Success
Designed
for all athletes: skills in time management and essay writing are taught along
with a complete introduction to the various student services offered on campus.
Academic
Assistance Program
An
academic assistance program designed to create dialogue between the student
athlete, coach, faculty, and athletic advisors. It allows any potential
academic problems with an athlete to be identified quickly and intervention to
occur at an early stage, as well as identifying academic achievement and
accomplishments.
Facilities
Lakehead University students enjoy extensive
fitness facilities at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse and our newest facility, The
Hangar. And guess what, there are no extra gym membership fees required!
The
C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse features the 15,000 square foot Thunderdome gymnasium,
state-of-the-art Wolves’ Den fitness centre, 50 metre eight lane swimming pool,
cardio room, outdoor sports fields, outdoor beach volleyball court, Kinesiology
labs, squash court, and change rooms complete with saunas and showers.
The
Hangar, Lakehead’s modern student athletic facility, further expands our
diverse athletic resources. The new 50,000 square foot facility features a 200-metre
track, pro-grade artificial turf field, climbing wall, and additional weight
training, aerobic, yoga/dance and cardio areas.
Sports Medicine Clinic
Lakehead University's year-round Sports Medicine clinic is conveniently located in the Hangar. The clinic's highly qualified Physicians, Physiotherapist, Athletic Therapist and Massage Therapist specialize in specific requirements for athletes. The clinic is geared toward sporting groups like soccer, running, gymnastics, and swimming, but is open to the general public as well as students. Moreover, students looking for a career in sports medicine have a great place in which to work and learn, right on campus!
